Mickey Tries to Cook
First TV showing: October 2, 1999 on Mickey Mouse Works. Also shown in the House of Mouse episode "Goofy's Menu Magic." This cartoon features Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, and Jose.

Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto go out for a picnic and Mickey made “cheese ham ham ham tomato cheese ham tomato and cheese” sandwiches for everyone. Apparently that’s all he can make because Minnie is tired of the same old thing, chews Mickey out for it, and says she would like a fancy dinner.

At the grocery store, Mickey is shopping for cheese and he hears Minnie giggle in the next aisle. Mickey take a peek and sees she’s talking to Jose Carioca. Jose is acting all smooth and Minnie complements Jose for being “such a gourmet” Jose says he’ll make a her a romantic Brazilian feast and says she’s lucky to have found him make it for her. Mickey gets all nervous thinking she’s going to have dinner with Jose and get a new boyfriend. Minnie and Jose leave “I’ll see you tonight,” and Mickey is now determined to make that fancy dinner for Minnie.

Jose the gourmet

Smooth, Jose

Now at Mickey's house, Mickey pulls out his “How to Cook a Fancy Dinner and Win Back Your Girl from Her New Boyfriend” cook book and gets to work. Things are going find, until the fan that’s next to the cook book blows a few pages over and Mickey ends up mixing up recipes and things get really weird. He ends up mixing a whole bunch of different foods together (along with a ship anchor and a kitchen skin) and stuffs it all in the microwave. Ensues an explosion causing Mickey’s house to go into space and back.

Minnie comes by and is shocked by seeing the house fall back down, goes in to see if Mickey is ok, and see the kitchen in a mess. She asks what happened and Mickey makes up a lame excuse that Minnie doesn’t buy. Mickey then tells the truth, how he was trying to make her a fancy dinner, but then figures she doesn’t need him anymore since she has a new boyfriend that can cook, and he starts to walk out. Minnie pulls him back, tells him Jose is not her boyfriend and that Jose was going to make a fancy dinner for her and Mickey as a surprise.

At the picnic spot again, Minnie is excited, and Jose comes with the dinner. But he ends up serving a “cheese ham ham ham tomato cheese ham tomato and cheese” sandwich. Minnie is mad and Mickey sates that’s his favorite.

The shocking twist ending!

Personal thoughts: Overall, not a great cartoon, typical slapstick stuff. But if you're a Jose Carioca fan like me, you'll like it enough. Although I am amused that Jose is not as great of a cook as he said he was. While trying to impress Minnie, he tells her that he's a good cook when he's not. Having it backfire on him with Minnie asking for the dinner, I can just imagine him thinking "Oh snap! How am I going to get out of this one?" and resorting to just making a sandwich since Minnie is sticking with Mickey anyway. Heh.
