House of Mouse - Season 2, episode 8 - "Not Too Goofy"

Mickey is introduced and greets the audience. As he tries to explain today's show, Goofy, waiting on tables, keeps crashing into things and interrupting Mickey. Backstage, the crew complains to Mickey that something needs to be done about Goofy. Mickey says that Goofy is just being goofy, but they keep complaining. So Mickey says he'll talk to him about being a little lees goofy, but Goofy heard the whole thing and says how they don't want Goofy, but "some kind of opposite, backwards, un-Goofy,” and he walks away.

Later Minnie says she has the problem solved and pulls Jose onto the screen saying she hired him. Jose says he’ll teach Goofy poise and grace. Mickey tells them to look for Goofy then and goes on stage to introduce a cartoon.

Jose Carioca, the solution to all your problems!

Back to back stage, Jose is with Goofy and explains that he’s going to teach him poise and grace. Jose says that by the time he’s threw with Goofy, he’ll be able the table cloth trick (pulling the table cloth off the table without braking the dinner wear), as he demonstrates. Goofy says he always wanted to do that and so they go to work. First, Jose demonstrates the proper way of waiting tables, “Good evening, Sir. My name is Jose, I will be your waiter this evening. How may I help you?” Goofy then pulls a table onto the scene, sits at it, and starts to order. This ticks off Jose. Next, Jose shows Goofy how to walk, but Goofy just falls down. Moving on, Jose tells Goofy to give it a try, to which Goofy give Jose a big slap on the back, Jose flies off screen, and Goofy says “Hey, how’s it going, Josey? What will it be?” Now, Goofy is trying to keep his balance by standing on one foot on top of a trash can, but he falls backwards into the freezer and comes out with a chicken on his head. Last, Goofy practices waiting on a person and does well. Jose says he did very good, and Goofy tanks him buy giving a big slap on the back causing Jose again flies off the screen again.

This is actually my favorite shot of Jose. How cute!

Jose is now with Mickey and Minnie and Minnie says that Goofy is now un-Goofy. So they watch Goofy wait on tables and he does everything perfectly. However, when Timon and Pumbaa asks him to do his signature “Wa-ha-ha-hooey” yell, he states that he is now un-goofy and wont do it. Mickey introduces a Goofy cartoon.

Still watching from backstage, Mickey says that the new Goofy just doesn’t seem like Goofy anymore. Jose says that he can’t turn an un-Goofy back into a Goofy. “I can!” Panchito says as he leaps onto the screen. Panchito says that the problem is Goofy forgot who he is, “but how can Goofy forget how to be goofy? That his name!” Mickey says he’s right and Panchito tells him to just introduce them and he’ll take care of the rest.

Why is Minnie so pissed looking?

So Mickey introduces The Three Caballeros and how they’re going to sing a song about being proud of who you really are. So The Three Caballeros sing “My Name is Panchito,” which is how Panchito he got his long name: Panchito Romero Miguel Junipero Francisco Quintero Gonzalez and is about his relatives.

Story time!

Huh?

Panchito: Sorry, Donald. I'm not going to let you dance on my family tree!
Donald: (sniff)

However, the song doesn’t work and Goofy is still un-Goofy. So Mickey and Minnie play another Goofy cartoon. After the cartoon, Jose and Panchito want to try again with another song, but Mickey says that he knows Goofy better than anyone and he should have took care of it himself from the start. So on stage, the whole crew comes on. Mickey thanks The Three Caballeros, to which Jose and Panchito bow to the audience, and he thanks the star of the cartoons they played, Goofy. Mickey apologizes to Goofy for being so hard on him before and asks him to go back to being goofy. Goofy cries of happiness a bit and says he’ll go back to being Goofy. “But first, Jose, this is for you!” Goofy then tries to do the table cloth trick, but gets warped in the cloth and falls down.

Personal opinions: Before, I said there was something about Jose’s voice that I just didn’t like. Well, after watching this episode, I have actually grown to like it. While I still like the original voice better, this is a good replacement and should be used for any future cartoons that Jose is in (if that ever happens). However, no matter how much I like Panchito, his voice is still pretty bad and it actually irked me when he was said “ But how can Goofy forget how to be goofy? That’s his name!”

The song I thought was cute. It’s nice to see something with Panchito in the spotlight for once since The Three Caballeros movie. It was a bit weird though that some of the images of Panchito’s relatives during the song are shown as cooked chicken. Donald got the shaft with this bit, not singing at all while Jose got a few lines, but since he’s one of the stars of House of Mouse, I can let this slide. I gotta say though, when I first read a description of this episode before seeing it, I had an image in my mind of Panchito playing a acoustic guitar for this song. How neat would have that been?

As for the rest of the episode, it might all be typical slap-stick comedy that most people might get bored with, but it’s still something that a Three Caballeros fan will enjoy seeing.
